I live in Eastbourne, a small village near Wellington, New Zealand.  My connection to other arts disciplines inform my current work and I am driven by light, colour and texture. Geometric pattern and lines are recurring motifs and have their roots in my love for architecture and pattern.

Materially my media are similarly varied, ranging from painting and printing to felt-making with other techniques, mostly paper and textile related, in between. It may be a sign of a short attention span, but let’s go with ‘creative thinking’ instead.

My work is shown at galleries across the region. I continue to be encouraged and humbled by the interest and awards that they have garnered. I am also grateful for the support of family and friends and will happily continue to answer questions like “What is that supposed to be?” or “What are you making?”!

Taranaki National Art Awards, 2023

Winner, Fibre Arts

Judge’s comments:

A mesmerising work in the Fibre art category influenced by music, origami, polyrhythms and the cross as a multi-layered signifier.

It is a miracle that a two-dimensional sheet of paper can be transformed into three-dimensional sculptural landscape of oblique and rectilinear planes energised in paint and overlaid with rhythms of fibre; black and white to accentuate shape and even contest the three dimensionality of form.

The more one engages with the work; rhythm and accent emerge in this carefully orchestrated landscape of nuanced pattern and form. The white fibre patterns of crosses and vertical bars entice the eye to engage in each of the rows; fifteen in all. The initial row descends uninterrupted from top to bottom establishing a rhythmical unity that is subsequently subject to strategic displacement as painted planes framed and unframed in black thread dance to an alternative beat allowing painted passages space for expression.
